One of the most rewarding areas of my practice is my work with local organizations seeking to assist and enrich our community.
I currently serve as the president of the Board of Directors for the Peer
Information Center for Teens (PICT), an organization that has been working
for more that sixteen years now in the Richmond School System to bring
skills and resources to teenagers so they can help their peers. PICT is just
one of the many effective local organizations working to make our community
a better place.
As an attorney, I look for opportunities to employ my knowledge and training in ways that can enrich our community. One way I have found is in the initial formation of an organization. From incorporation, through recognition by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) organization, the assistance of legal counsel is crucial.
I have helped several local organizations form and gain their tax-exempt
status. If you have a group looking at going through this process, contact
me. I will be glad to talk with you further.
If your interests are more focused, and less broad based, you may want to consider a charitable trust. Trusts can offer you control and flexibility over funds while also giving you the opportunity to provide charitable tax deductions to those who contribute funds to the trust. Many have found that such an investment vehicle offers them the opportunity to have a greater impact over the long term than they could ever hope to have by making direct contributions annually.
